Toenails being cut for an older client at Harbour Foot Clinic in Mullingar

Help With Toenail Cutting for Older People in Mullingar

Cutting your own toenails is one of those jobs that quietly gets harder with age. Bending down, seeing clearly and getting enough grip on thick nails all become more difficult, and many people end up leaving their nails longer than they should.

If that sounds familiar, for you or for a parent, routine foot care at Harbour Foot Clinic takes the job off your hands. Here’s how it works.

Harbour Foot Clinic in Mullingar offers toenail cutting for older people as part of a routine foot care appointment. Nails are trimmed, thick nails are reduced and edges are filed smooth, hard skin is eased and feet are checked for any problems. Appointments take around 30 minutes, and family members can book on a parent’s behalf online or by calling 087 232 5143.

Why Cutting Toenails Gets Harder With Age

Toenails often grow thicker and harder with age, and can curve or become brittle. At the same time, reaching your feet, steady hands and good eyesight can all become harder to rely on.

It’s no surprise that toenail cutting is one of the most common things people ask us for help with.

Signs It's Time to Get Help

• Nails are left long because they’re too hard to reach or cut
• Nails are thick, yellow or curving into the skin
• Socks wear through at the toes, or shoes start to rub
• Trimming has caused small cuts or nicks
• A family member has been cutting them and isn’t confident doing it

The Problems Long or Thick Nails Cause

Long or thick toenails press against shoes, which makes walking uncomfortable and can affect balance. They can also lead to ingrown toenails, or catch and tear.

We explain the link with balance in how foot care helps prevent falls in older adults.

Why Not to Struggle at Home

Ordinary clippers can crack thick nails or catch the skin, and small cuts can take longer to heal for people with diabetes or poor circulation.

If cutting your nails means straining, guessing or relying on someone who isn’t sure, it’s safer to leave it to us.

What Happens at a Toenail Cutting Appointment

Toenail cutting is part of a routine foot care appointment, which takes around 30 minutes. We start by checking your feet and nails, then:

• Trim and shape the nails to a safe length
• Reduce thick nails so they’re comfortable in shoes
• File the edges smooth
• Ease any hard skin or corns that are causing pressure
• Finish with a moisturising cream

Sterile instruments are used for every client.

Booking for a Parent or Relative

Many of our appointments are booked by sons, daughters and carers. You can book online or call us on 087 232 5143, and you’re welcome to come in with them.

It helps to let us know beforehand about diabetes, circulation problems, reduced feeling in the feet or blood-thinning medication, so we can plan the appointment safely.

What to Wear and Bring

Loose trousers that roll up easily, or a skirt or dress, and shoes that are easy to slip off and on. Bring a list of any regular medication.

If a particular pair of shoes is rubbing, bring them along so we can take a look.

How Often to Book

Most people find that every six to eight weeks keeps nails at a comfortable length. If nails grow quickly or are very thick, every four to six weeks may suit better. We’ll suggest the right interval after the first visit.

When a Medical Pedicure Suits Better

If feet need more attention, such as very thick nails and a lot of hard skin together, a medical pedicure gives more time for both. We’ll let you know if that would suit better.
